Anche quest’anno, come ogni anno, si terrà l’annuale Convention mondiale sulla fantascienza e il fantastico (Worldcon) con l’assegnazione dei premi Hugo, il maggiore riconoscimento per questo genere letterario. La 72a convention, denominata Loncon 3, si terrà a Londra presso l’ExCeL dal 14 al 18 agosto prossimi e sarà ricca di eventi. Tra gli ospiti d’onore ci sarà Robin Hobb autrice della Trilogia dell’Assassino, ma molti altri autori hanno annunciato la loro presenza. Tra gli altri sarà possibile incontrare: Joe Abercrombie, Alastair Reynolds, Lisa Tuttle, Peter F. Hamilton, Mary Robinette Kowal, Patrick Rothfuss e George R.R. Martin. Per quanto riguarda i premi Hugo 2014, da segnalare quest’anno la decisione di candidare al premio come Miglior Romanzo l’intera saga de La Ruota del Tempo, composta da ben 14 volumi più un antefatto, scritta da Robert Jordan e completata recentemente da Brandon Sanderson.
C.S. Lewis al premio Hugo
Quest’anno, in occasione del 75 anniversario della prima Worldcon (le convention vennero sospese per tre anni durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale), verranno anche assegnati degli speciali premi Retro Hugo 1939. Tra i candidati al premio di Miglior Romanzo troviamo Lontano dal Pianeta Silenzioso di C.S. Lewis. Gli eventi comprendono sessioni di autografi da parte degli autori, le cerimonie di consegna degli Hugo Award, presentazioni di opere teatrali ed alcune lezioni accademiche e multimediali su argomenti quali: fanfilm di Doctor Who, il rapporto tra Sherlock Holmes e il fantastico, la letteratura per bambini.
C’è anche Tolkien
Giovedì 14 agosto sarà particolarmente interessante per gli appassionati delle opere di Tolkien perché il discorso di apertura sarà dedicato proprio alle opere del Professore con il titolo Il Signore degli Anelli e Lo Hobbit: dai libri ai film e ritorno e sarà tenuto da David Brawn, direttore editoriale della HarperCollins. Nella stessa giornata, interessante sarà la tavola rotonda sull’esperienza della lettura dei libri di Tolkien nelle diverse età della vita, dai bambini agli adulti, tenuta da Chris M Barkley, Michael Cobley, Constance G.J. Wagner, Jessica Yates. Tra le artiste della mostra dedicata a Tolkien ci saranno poi le opere di Ruth Lacon, Anke Eissmann e John Howe. Il programma completo è disponibile sul sito ufficiale. Lego, Tolkien Style – WOOFA

Copy a tower from Lord of the Rings, mimic a fantasy scene or just use your imagination and recreate the Shire. All with thousands of pieces of Lego.

Tolkien Society Presents: David Brawn

David Brawn
David Brawn has been the Publisher for Tolkien at HarperCollins since 1995. In a rare public appearance he reveals how publishing has evolved over 20 years, how Tolkien’s work continues to defy publishing conventions, and how working with filmmakers on movie tie-ins was a dream that very nearly didn’t come true.
Tolkien Society Presents: The Unpayable Debt?

JRR Tolkien once wrote of CS Lewis, “The unpayable debt that I owe to him was not ‘influence’ as it is ordinarily understood, but sheer encouragement.” A group of genre authors discuss what they owe to Tolkien, as both readers and writers. How far it is possible, or imaginable, to repay such a debt?
